Are you even a Harry Potter fan if you don’t know what house you are in?

Well yes because I am a fan and have been since I was seven years old but I only took the quiz today.

I remember when Pottermore came out. I was really excited and I’m not sure what came up for me at the time but I never opened an account, until today.

I was reading a blog post by Nily about the Harry Potter Tag on the twentieth anniversary of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. She mentioned her house and this is something that I have noticed a lot, particularly on Instagram.

People list their house in their bios. You guys know that I love interactions between people, stories and pop culture. Seeing people feeling part of something magical is pretty cool if you ask me.

For anyone who doesn’t know, the characters in the books and films are sorted into teams (sort of) according to personal traits, like a magical personality test conducted by a talking witches hat upon arrival at Hogwarts. Those teams are called Houses. Each house eats, learns and lives together. Seriously if you don’t know any of this go read the books, watch the movies at least twice.

So I decided it was time for me to find out. I didn’t really mind what house I was sorted into but I always kind of thought I was a Ravenclaw.

Turns out I’m not as clever as I thought.

Where do I belong?

I was sorted into,

I’ll let you fill in the sound effects yourself in your head.

I remember when I was a kid and the films came out. My Dad would get the Sunday papers and there was promotional material in them every week.

One week there was a magazine with a sorting quiz in it.

Of course, every child wants to be in Gryffindor, so we would do the quiz over and over until we got the only house we wanted and then, of course, we would celebrate as though we had not cheated, to begin with.

And then we all grew up.

Here’s the thing I do a lot of tests at college. I have done the Big Five personality test more times than I care to count but for projects, I’ve also done shyness scales, mood scales and more.

They don’t always show what you would like them to. My Big Five scores always show above average on neuroticism but guess what that is me, I can be neurotic.

Its what drives me to do well and work hard but also what makes me anxious.

According to Pottermore’s Sorting quiz, I’m also courageous, brave and determined.

I think that suits me too.

Now I’m not saying that the Sorting Hat quiz should be used in a psychology lab, it, of course, is only a bit of fun but I do think that all houses have traits I would feel lucky to have and others not so much.

From what I’ve read of people who didn’t get sorted into the house they wanted those traits are some they have come to admire in themselves.

They become proud of their House and what it says about them.

I feel proud.

The other side of the coin.

If you have read the books or seen the films you know that Harry Potter and his close friends are in Gryffindor.

You would have to wonder if perhaps being in Gryffindor also enhanced the traits that led to the sorting.

Are the characters brave and so were sorted into Gryffindor or did being in Gryffindor make them brave?

Or both.

You know how I feel about Nature and determinism and if you don’t, follow the link. But what about the effects of being in a group?

Harry, after all, finds an element of choice.

Social psychologists say group membership forms part of our identities. What about identification with a fictional group?

I don’t know. I suppose it must depend on real-world interactions with other members.

I’ve made friends on less in common.

From what I’ve seen online, your House and the Harry Potter story are taken very seriously indeed.

All I know for sure is I very much enjoyed taking the quiz and the reflection session it inspired.

Pottermore is a site where you can go read extra stories, character information and news about the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts World. There are other quizzes for your patronus, mine is a calico cat, wand, (hazel wood with a Phoenix feather core). It’s all logged on your Wizarding Passport which you get when you create an account.

I’m only just beginning to explore Pottermore but it’s pretty cool.

If you are a fan you know all of this because I’m late to the party, this is the most fun I’ve had in a while.

The only thing is I wish there were an app.

What about you?

Are there any other Gryffindors out there?

If not, what house are you in? We’re you happy with the result?

Should I display mine on my Instagram page?

Let me know in the comments. If you haven’t taken the quiz yet, what the hell are you waiting for?

Until next time,

  1. I am a proud Slytherin – When I first took the quiz all my Harry Potter loving friends responded with ‘of course you are’ haha! It definitely fits me well.

  2. Big Potter fan. 🙂

I remember taking the quiz on the original Harry Potter site, though I’ve no idea how many years ago that was. Ravenclaw and still proud. Loved this post. x

  3. I was sorted into Ravenclaw and was surprisingly happy with the result. I, like you, had always wanted to be in Gryffindor but deep down I knew that my personality didn’t really align with their qualities (despite Hermione because a massive idol of mine). I haven’t displayed it on my insta because it doesn’t really match my audience, but if you’re a massive potterhead then why not!

  4. Thanks for posting about this, I’ve always wondered about Pottermore – I think the only thing I’d want would be the quiz, but I do like the passport idea too. Is it worth joining? I suspect I’m Ravenclaw, but congrats on your Gryffindor discovery.

    1. I think so. I wanted to do the quiz but I like the bits of extra information you can read about characters. I’ve always wanted another book and I cannot get into Fantastic Beasts at all, so I personally like it. There are a few quizzes on there. Don’t be so sure about your house, you may surprise yourself but if not Ravenclaw is a great one. I suspected I was a Ravenclaw and I wasn’t but as someone said the other day in a comment everyone has traits from all the houses anyway.
